Fisherman’s Mark’s 2025 Backpack Program: A Community Coming Together

Fisherman’s Mark’s annual Backpack Program was once again a resounding success, sending 222 local students back to school prepared and supported thanks to the generosity of our community.

This year’s distribution looked a little different — and even more joyful. Families picked up their grade-level essentials at the Free MARKet entrance, then headed to two large tents near the greenhouse where each child was able to choose their own backpack. The freedom of choice was a hit, adding an extra spark of excitement to the day.

The event also featured community partners who offered resources and encouragement, including SAFE in Hunterdon and One Voice, which provided information on youth coping and anti-bullying strategies. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Princeton School of Rock provided live music, and the retro Good Humor ice cream truck — courtesy of Tom Gesior, NJ Ice Cream Man — delighted kids and parents alike with sweet treats.

“It was a wonderful and very festive day,” said Nick Halladay, Program Manager at Fisherman’s Mark. “Smiles abounded — from the children picking out their backpacks, to parents and grandparents, to our staff, volunteers, and even the musicians’ families. It really was a total feel-good event.”

Sponsors and Donors

This year’s program was made possible by the support of many community sponsors, including:

  • River Valley Realty
  • Indivisible New Hope/Lambertville
  • Lambertville American Legion
  • Lambertville Elks
  • Thompson Memorial
  • Zanya Spa
  • Copper Hill Country Club
Major donors, including River Valley Realty and Zanya Spa, provided critical funding to purchase supplies, while the generosity of others filled the gaps to ensure every student was ready for the year ahead.

Volunteers

Behind the scenes, dedicated volunteers — including Suki Hertz, Sue Whitlock, and Janet Grove — helped with set-up, organization, and ensuring the day went smoothly for families.

“Our Backpack Program is about more than school supplies,” said Jennifer Williford, Executive Director of Fisherman’s Mark. “It’s about dignity, about creating joy, and about reminding children and families that this community is here for them. Every smile that day was proof of what’s possible when neighbors support neighbors.”

With the continued growth of need in the region, the Backpack Program remains one of Fisherman’s Mark’s most visible examples of how community partnerships — from sponsors and volunteers to local musicians and ice cream vendors — can create an event that’s equal parts practical and celebratory.
